What To Wear For Family Photos - Part 2: The What To Wear Panic Ends Here
The “NO- GO” Items
The Neon Glow
See the neon reflection on face ?
The problem: Neon pinks, greens, and oranges are popular for kids, but they act like a coloured lightbulb, giving everyone a neon skin stone that is very difficult to fix in editing.
The Fix: Switch neon for rust or soft mauve.
The “Moire” Effect
The Moire effect on Dad’s shirt
The Problem: Tiny repetitive patterns create a wavy distortion on digital sensors called “Moire”.
The Fix : Stick to solids or larger-scale patterns.
Giant Logos or characters
The problem: A T-shirt with a giant “GAP” logo instantly dates the photo, and draws the eye away from the families faces, looks like an advertisement.
Sibling shoot in Southlands, Vancouver
The fix : Keep tops simple or try layering a cute denim jacket or an open flannel shirt over the child’s favourite shirt.
The Wrong Shoes
The Problem: Families often spend money on new outfits but then wear old, scuffed up sneakers.
The right shoes for the outfit
The Fix: Clean loafers, or simple sandals are best, or as I often do, I ask them to go barefoot.
My favourite, bare feet with outfits
Transition Lenses
The Problem: If someone wears transition lenses for an outdoor shoot, they will look like they are wearing sunglasses in every photo.
The Fix: Ask clients to bring a pair of non-transition lenses if possible or ask optician to supply you with clear lenses for times such as these. Alternatively you can just remove your transitional glasses.
