How long is a Family Photo Session? | Vancouver Family Photographer

I’m sure this answer will differ depending which photographer you use, but I as a Vancouver family photographer will share how long a typical session lasts with me. I don’t set a timer on my sessions, because every family is unique, however, they generally take between 60- 90 minutes.  There are a lot of different factors that determine how long we might actually need.

How many people in your family?

The size of your family is a big factor. If you have many children, we may need more time for all of the different combinations and groupings. But if you only have one or two kids — or first time parents, we won’t need as much time. If you are expecting a child and need a Maternity session, those usually take about 40 minutes.

How much walking is necessary on location

Some locations require very little walking , and I prefer spots where walking is minimal. Of course If we are  doing my signature black- and - white studio look, there is no walking at all.  Many of my Vancouver photo locations, like the seawall, Stanley park, Spanish banks, or UEL , walking is minimal.

I also like Pitt Lake for the stunning mountain backdrops, the long grass and the lake views, and the Waterfront Commons park offering diverse settings from rustic to rural, but I think locations need a blog on its own right, I have so many wonderful spots. I’ve noted this for the next blag session

Keeping the kids happy

If your children are well rested and have just eaten they are generally up for an adventure. If they are enjoying themselves and playing then I just simply shoot around them, those candid moments are the best . However you just never really know with kids. If someone is having a “bad day” I will give you the time needed to help make them happy again. This might make the session slightly shorter or longer. We try to coordinate sessions around nap schedules to ensure the best possible outcome. Most of the time, you don't even need to pay attention to me; I’ll be in the background snapping away while the kids play. Time flies when they're having fun!

The best time of day for photos

With the Vancouver weather, I always keep an eye on the light. I prefer mornings or that beautiful Vancouver golden hour glow we get just before sunset.  However, the best time of day for your Vancouver family portraits  ultimately depends on your children’s ages and schedules—whether we are working around nap times or after school activities we will find a time that ensures everyone is happy and the light is perfect.

How do I know when we have enough photos?

I’ve been photographing families for nearly a decade. Once I’ve captured all the combinations we need, I know we’re good. I try not to push it too long once the kids have reached their limit. I always ask parents if there is a specific shot they still want; if not, it’s a wrap! I prioritize the "everyone in the frame" shots at the beginning, but you will always walk away with a diverse and full gallery.

There is no set time limit; we follow the flow of the session and stop when it feels right. If you have any questions, I’m always just a phone call away!
